Sports fans flock to
Sioux Falls in March
It will be another busy March for sports in Sioux Falls. The Sioux Falls Sports Authority is hosting three major championships in the city this year. The sports commission, which was formed in 2006, has hosted the Summit League Basketball Championship each year since 2009 and regularly plays host to other major collegiate sporting events.
March Madness in Sioux Falls tips off with the Summit League Basketball Championships on March 7. Eight men's and eight women's basketball teams will travel to Sioux Falls for the opportunity to punch their ticket to the big dance. This championship, which takes place at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, has entertained tens of thousands of fans on a consistent basis. Its men's and women's championship game are aired nationally on ESPN.
From the first Summit League Basketball Championship in the Sioux Falls Arena to present day, the Sioux Falls community, businesses and Summit League fans have supported this tournament not only by purchasing tickets but also by providing the athletes with an outstanding student-athlete experience. When off the court and out in the Sioux Falls community, Summit League teams will see their logo in restaurants and hotels. This provides them with a real championship feel and further proves that Sioux Falls is invested in this tournament. The hospitality that our local restaurants, entertainment venues and other businesses provide to Summit League student-athletes, coaches and fans is something they will never forget.
Once the 2020 Summit League Basketball Championships conclude, the basketball madness will move to the Sanford Pentagon for the 29th annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. This is the third consecutive year Sioux Falls will host this tournament, which brings 32 teams from around the United States to our city. Play will begin on March 11 and conclude with the national championship game on March 17. The championship contest will air to a national audience on ESPN3.
During the week of the NAIA tournament, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority pairs up all 32 teams with a 'team host'. Being a team host for an NAIA school involves welcoming them to Sioux Falls, answering any questions and treating the team to a sit-down meal. In return for their generosity, the team host has their logo displayed on digital boards throughout the Sanford Pentagon during the tournament, is allowed to sit on the bench with their team and is invited to team activities throughout the week.
In addition to hosting two basketball tournaments in the month of March, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority is also hosting the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships. This championship takes place inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center March 13-14 and brings in 180 student-athletes from around the country.
These events will have a combined economic impact of nearly $10 million dollars for the community. The success of each event is possible thanks to the work of volunteers. From assisting with the locker rooms, to ushering, to working in hospitality and much more, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority would not be able to put on such impressive events and showcase the city of Sioux Falls without its hundreds of dedicated volunteers.
