Thanks to our business community,

The Sioux Falls area is fortunate to have the backing of businesses that step up to the plate for major community events, like the recent JazzFest and Sioux Falls Airshow. Through the support of the business community, our quality of life is enhanced through the opportunities to participate in events like these — and many of them are free because of that support.

Perhaps this summer more than ever, it's appropriate that the business community says "thank you" to our area farmers and producers. The lack of rain is posing a challenge for ag producers — affecting both crops and livestock now and in the months to come. We can't control the weather, but we can take time out to appreciate those who work in the trenches in feeding our nation.

The Chamber, along with the help of area businesses and their employees, expects to feed approximately 5,000 area farmers and producers at the 29th Annual Ag Appreciation Day as part of the Sioux Empire Fair next week. Even as our community continues to diversify and grow, many people, including some of our members, may not be aware of the emphasis the Chamber still places on agriculture. Ag Appreciation Day is one way we remember our roots. This winter, we'll be celebrating the 60th anniversary of our Sioux Empire Farm Show.

Everyone from elected officials and political candidates to media personalities to bankers and nearly every kind of business in between can be found at the fairgrounds serving up a meal and making conversation with our regional producers. It's a great problem to have that we almost have too many volunteers to help out with serving the meal. Thanks to a great partnership with Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, we're also able to provide a free gate entrance in addition to the meal so that our producers can enjoy the fair.

Agriculture is South Dakota's largest industry. Sioux Falls continues to grow and prosper — we're adding more people and more businesses every day and that's good for all of us. But we still haven't forgotten where we started and it's important to be reminded of that.

Thank you to all who work in the agricultural industry. And thank you to our Chamber members for your continued support of this industry through events and activities like Ag Appreciation Day.
