American Cancer Society executive to talk about importance of research at Dec. 12 event

A Dec. 12 breakfast sponsored by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network will discuss the economic impact of federal cancer research funding. Dr. Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of the American Cancer Society, will be the featured speaker.

The breakfast will be held from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased online at, or call (605) 323-3548.

Sioux Falls is a growing regional burgeoning cancer treatment and research sector. This breakfast will focus on the importance of federal cancer research funding and what people can do to ensure those dollars continue in order for researchers to make new discoveries.

Brawley, M.D., F.A.C.P., chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, is responsible for promoting the goals of cancer prevention, early detection, and quality treatment through cancer research and education. He champions efforts to decrease smoking, improve diet, detect cancer at the earliest stage, and provide the critical support cancer patients need. He also guides efforts to enhance and focus the research program, upgrade the Society’s advocacy capacity, and concentrate community cancer control efforts in areas where they will be most effective.

In addition to Brawley, other speakers include:

Dr. John Lee from Sanford Health, physician researcher and head and neck cancer specialist;

Cheryl Ageton, director of Avera’s clinical trials program, who will be joined by a breast cancer survivor treated through a clinical trial at Avera;

Dr. Richard Deming, a Madison, S.D., native and oncologist who lives in Des Moines and serves on the national ACS CAN Board of Directors;

Rich Naser, Director of the South Dakota Technology Business Center, who can speak to the importance of research to the South Dakota economy; and

Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether, who will speak about why he supports ACS CAN.

The breakfast is sponsored by Avera Health, Sanford Health, Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sioux Falls Development Foundation.
