59th Annual Sioux Empire Farm Show starts tomorrow
The 59th Annual Sioux Empire Farm Show, sponsored by the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held Jan. 24-28 at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls. Admission is free. A complete schedule can be found at www.siouxempirefarmshow.org.

Rachel Mehlhaf, Farm Credit Services of America, is the 2012 Sioux Empire Farm Show Chair. A strong showing of livestock will dominate the Sioux Empire Farm Show portion of the “Sioux Falls Salute to Agriculture.” All livestock events will take place in the Expo Building at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds.

A ribbon cutting will open the Sioux Empire Farm Show Tuesday, Jan 24, at 4:30 p.m. at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. The Youth Calf Show will follow, beginning at 5 p.m.

Purebred livestock shows start Wednesday, Jan. 25, with the Angus and Simmental shows held Wednesday morning at the Expo Building; sales will begin at 11:30 a.m. These breeds are competing for the coveted $12,000 Supreme Row purse that will be awarded Friday evening at the Mayor’s Round-up and Sale of Champions. The Market Barrow and Gilt Show will also take place Wednesday morning.

The Chamber partners with Midwest Shows, Inc., on the commercial exhibits, which run through Friday under the name "Sioux Falls Farm Show." Commercial exhibits, known as the Sioux Falls Farm Show, will be on display Jan. 27-30 in the north end of the Expo Building as well as the Sioux Falls Convention Center and Sioux Falls Arena. The Chamber partners with Midwest Shows, based out of Austin, Minn., to sell the commercial exhibit spaces. Visitors will have the opportunity to walk through commercial exhibit areas at both locations to see the latest in agricultural production. Commercial exhibits are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A ribbon cutting celebrating the opening of the commercial exhibits will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the Convention Center foyer.

Thursday, Jan. 26, includes more purebred shows and sales, with the Hereford, Charolais, Limousin and Red Angus breeds showing in the morning with sales starting at 11:30 a.m. The Market Lamb show will begin at 6 p.m. The Feeder Heifer show will also begin at 6 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 27, will be another busy day at the farm show, beginning with the Supreme Row judging at 9 a.m. The purebred cattle will vie for the title of Supreme Champion bull and heifer overall breeds with a $12,000 purse at stake split between the buyers and consigners. The winners will be announced prior to the Sale of Champions auction Friday evening. Friday also includes the Market Steer show at 9 a.m., followed by the feeder steer show at 10 a.m..

KSOO Viewpoint University host Rick Knobe will announce the Grand Champion Bull and Female over all breeds at the Mayor's Round-up and Sale of Champions. The $12,000 Supreme Row Cash Awards will be presented to the consignors of the along with the buyers of the animals. The sponsors of the $12,000 purse are the Tri-State Neighbor (gold), Wells Fargo Bank (silver) and Campbell Supply Co. (bronze). The Chamber will also recognize the Farm Family of the Year: the Glenn and Gaylin Scott Family of Valley Springs; and the Agri-Business Citizens of the Year: Jo Beal and Scott Wick from the W.H. Following the Supreme Row presentation, the Mayor's Round-up and Sale of Champions will take place. This auction features the best of the best market livestock shown at the 2012 Sioux Empire Farm Show. Area businesses and individuals will pay premiums to producers by bidding on the top five market steers, top 10 market swine, top five market lambs and top two market goats. Auctioneers and emcees Jim Woster, Joel Westra and Pete Atkins will take the reins for the sale. In 2011, more than $45,000 in premiums were paid out to producers, with 100 percent of the premiums given to the producers.

The Mayor’s Round-Up and Sale of Champions will be held Friday, Jan. 27 at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel PLUS Exhibit Hall. Social hour is at 5:30 p.m., dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person, which includes a prime rib dinner, with reserved tables of eight. Saturday, Jan. 28, the final day of the Sioux Empire Farm Show, begins at 6:30 a.m. with registration for the Senior Collegiate Judging Contest. Four-year colleges are invited to participate. Registration for the Youth and Open Rabbit Show begins at 8:30 a.m. The Junior Judging Contest begins at 10 a.m. The Breeding Heifer Show begins at 12:30 p.m. in the Expo Building. The final event for the Sioux Empire Farm show is the Pony Pull and the Draft Horse Pull beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Expo Building. Admission is $6 for adults and $2 for children.
